My husband and I have been living in Northern Virginia for about eight weeks now. The first few weeks were filled with the obligatory unpacking/getting settled stuff and it was done under a near constant downpour. Seriously, it rained for a month. I'm not making this stuff up.
So we didn't have much time to spend outside. A lack of outdoor adventures was one of the biggest issues we faced while we were living in the urban hellscape that is Houston. We're outdoors people. We like to disappear into the woods. So, the first chance we got here in NoVa, that's just what we did.
Our first stop was Red Rock Wilderness Overlook Regional Park right here in our very own Leesburg. It took us about 5 minutes in outlet heavy traffic on a weekend afternoon to get there. Honestly, we could take a nice long bike ride there if we really wanted to. Such is the case with pretty much everything in our town. It's wonderful!
I wasn't sure exactly what to expect when we got to the park. People online described it as secluded and relatively little used but I'm skeptical of anywhere that's not reported to have a ton of people after spending a year living in a city with an area population of 6 million.
We pulled up to a small gravel parking lot right next to a residential property. If you're not careful you can end up in someone's private driveway. On the other side of the parking lot is a historical building that was once an ice house. A short distance away is the trail entrance. It's nice and wooded and unpaved. I wouldn't recommend this trail to anyone who has a hard time maneuvering.
The best part of the trail, hands down was the view of the Potomac from the bluffs. It was gorgeous and relatively easy to hike to. If you're in the area, check this place out.
